Pixma ip8750 has a constant alarm light

I had just printed a nice A3 photo and then switched the printer off at the wall.  When I switched it on again the next day the orange alarm light is constantly on and the printer won't function.  I can't turn it on and the ink draw doesn't move when I open the top and it isn't connected to the internet.  I have tried unplugging it and then plugging it in again and I've tried holding the alarm button for two minutes.  I have also tried holding the on button for two minutes.  I have even tried connecting it to my laptop via a printer cable but obviously without it being switched on it won't connect.  There's no paper jam.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to reset the printer or clear the error?
