Pixma MX860 print head will not move into position to change cartridges

I have an alert to change a low cartridge, and now when I open the cover instead of the print head moving into position so I can access the cartridges it jsut stays hidden to the far right and the LCD screen tells me to close it again.  I have tried test print jobs, cleaning the heads, unplugging the printer, nothing helps.

It worked fine since 2010, this is new.  s there anything else I can try to get this print head to cooperate again?

Odd. This morning it spontaneously began working again. I didn't change a thing since my original post.  Whatever.

I have this same problem. Does anyone know how this can be fixed other than spontaneity that the other person luckily had? thanks

If the printer has been unplugged for a few minutes and the issue still occurs, the printer may require service.
