PIXMA MX310 How to set up via USB

How do I get my printer to work? I plugged the USB into he computer brain and the cord into the wall , but the printer does  register

Have you followed the installation instructions for your printer explicitly? Do you HAVE the software for the printer?

It is very common for setup instructions to say to install the software/driver on the computer BEFORE connecting the USB cable.
