MY MX700 SUDDENLY STOPPED PRINTING OR COPYING IN GRAY SCALE. I am using an IMAC with OSX 10.8.2 and  have a usb connection between the printer and computer. So far I have replaced the "black" cartridge" Performed a cold start on the computer, and then the printer. I can print or copy in color but not in black. The scanner seems ok.

Hello BOBH.

First, a test of the printer should be performed.  Print a Nozzle Check Pattern to confirm whether the inks are being correctly ejected from the print head nozzles and whether the print head is correctly aligned.

Please follow these steps to do so:

 1.  Press the <COPY> button.

 2.  Press the <MENU> button.

 3.  Press left or right arrow key to select [MAINTENANCE/SETTINGS].

 4.  Press <OK>.

 5.  [MAINTENANCE] will appear.

 6.  Press <OK>.

 7.  [NOZZLE CHECK] will be highlighted.

 8.  Press <OK>.

 9.  [YES] will be selected.

10.  Press <OK>.  The Nozzle Check Pattern will print.

Please check to see if the black grid pattern prints above the color bars on the test printout.  If lines are broken or white lines are present, clean the print head.

To clean the print head, please follow these steps:

 1.  Press the <COPY> button.

 2.  Press the <MENU> button.

 3.  Press left or right arrow key to select [MAINTENANCE/SETTINGS].

 4.  Press <OK>.

 5.  [MAINTENANCE] will appear.

 6.  Press <OK>.

 7.  Use the down arrow to select [DEEP CLEANING].

 8.  Press <OK>.

 9.  [YES] will be selected.

10.  Press <OK>.  The printer will perform a printhead cleaning.  The print head cleaning takes approximately 30 seconds to complete.

Once this has been done, print another Nozzle Check Pattern to see if the print quality is improved.

I have the same issue - sort of. I hope you can assist me. I have a Pixma MG5400. I use both a Mac Book Pro and a iMac. I had set up on the Mac Book Pro and had set up a Print in Grayscale as my primary way of printing. When I got my iMac, the printer only shows grayscale but will only print in either color or black and white. The black and white even uses a lot of ink. It shows grayscale as an option, but does not recognize it and will print in color. Help! and Thank you.
