MX492 - Cannot scan Legal Documents using ADF

Brian5

Hi,

There's a weird limitation on my canon mx492. I can't scan legal size documents using the automatic document feeder (ADF), without the image being cut off. I can see this being a problem with the platen scanner, since it can only hold letter sizes, but not the ADF. Can a software update be made to add this functionality to the printer?

Hi Brian5,

Please open the IJ Scan Utility.  Once that is open, please click the Settings button in the lower left hand corner.

The Scan Settings will now appear.  On the left side, click on Document Scan.

On the right side, please choose an ADF option from the "Select Source" drop down box.

Two lines below that, please choose Legal from the Page Size drop down box.

Once those are set, click OK

Back in the IJ Scan Utility, please load a document to scan in your PIXMA MX492's ADF and then back on your computer, click the Document button to begin scanning.

Appreciate the reply, Patrick. However, while this does serve as a solution, it's inconvenient. There should be an auto paper size feature added to the 'Document (ADF/Platen)' source. The same thing goes for the canon mobile app, it's limited to letter size for the ADF. Please add an automatic paper setting to that as well. On a side note, I got the legal document to scan in auto-mode but this isn't always reliable. It may scan it as an image or pdf depending on how it looks.

It's likely a hardware limitation of the ADF itself and cannot be resolved through a software update. If you need to scan legal-size documents, consider using a flatbed scanner or a different ADF scanner that is designed to handle larger paper sizes. BTW, you can also try using virtual fake IDs. It's a really interesting concept that allows you to create a fake ID online that looks and feels real without having to go through the hassle of getting a physical fake ID.

It's not a hardware limitation, it's software. The ADF can scan legal documents using the auto scan mode in Canon's My Image Garden. If you use Document mode, the source must be set to an ADF only option in the IJ Scanner Utility, then you can set the paper size to either A5, Letter or Legal. The problems are, the auto scan mode doesn't always detect it's a document, so it isn't always saved as a PDF, and if you use the document mode with an ADF only source, the platen scanner is disabled. My proposal is to add an auto-paper size selection to the "ADF/Platen" source in the IJ Scan Utility, and the canon print mobile app.
