Home Printer MX920

Canon Managers,

I am writing to request a refund for my Canon printer MX920 because it does not print with one empty cartridge.  I am a full- time business women, wife and mother of children in school and we pretty much use BLACK INK.  We should be able to utilize any cartridge we choose without being penalized for having 1 or more empty color cartridges.  My color cartridges are all empty and I had been printing just fine with the XL Black Cartridge which still has ink.  But, now all of a sudden the printer is requesting that I replace only 1 color ink tank in order for printing to start.  I am extremely confused about how this printer functions in terms of ink cartridges.  Please explain how I can resume/start printing with the full black ink cartridge.  I am pusing the black button on the printer signifying i want to print using black and not color and the printer is not allowing that to happen.  Could someone help?

CANON PLEASE RESPOND IMMEDIATELY.

Greetings,

You are not going to get an immediate response.  This is a user to user forum.

If you want help from Canon directly, you will need to contact support.  1-800-OK-CANON (1-800-652-2666)  M-F 8am-8pm

You are not the first person to mention or ask this question.  Let me start by saying this.  This is not a Canon specific issue or behavior.  This is part of owning a color capable inkjet printer (any manufacturer).

What might help, if you see an option to enable Gray-Scale" printing, this should tell the printer to use just the black ink.

That said.  You can contact Canon and request a refund, but you will get faster results buying the correct printer for your intended use.  If you print black documents much/all of the time, I suggest that you invest in a laserjet printer.  Inkjet printers are great at color and photos.  Laser jet printers use toner, which is much better for document printing.  Depending on the model, they can do color too, and do it well, but don't cost as much to operate as an inkjet.  Higher number or page yield, lower per page printing cost are examples.

Telling a color inkjet printer to print in black only doesn't mean use use black ink only.  Ya, I know what you're thinking, frigging rip off, but like I said, its not just Canon...  all printer manufacturers do this.  They are in business to sell you ink, period.  Both technologies can require that all inks or toners (if color capable) be installed and at some minimum level of capacity.  Remember, this is part of owning a printer.  (Any brand).

Yes, in a perfect world, we should be allowed to run each tank bone dry and print in any color we want, but it just doesn't work like that.  So you either take the inkjet for your black documents with the option to print in color occassionally, at a higher cost, or buy a laserjet.  An inkjet is going to give you better photo printing richer, more vibrant colors.  A laserjet will do a better job meeting your document printing needs.  (Again depending on the model) It can also do color, graphs, pamphlets, brouchures, etc  It won't do photos as nice as an inkjet.  Which you choose depends on your needs.

I know this is not quite the answer you were looking for, but I hope it helps you understand whats available and how to choose what will work best for you.

When you search this forum, there are others having the same issue including me.  I have been A FAITHFUL canon photographer since 1979!  My printer just started the same BS with the emply color.  I only print at home in B/W and now CANON is forcing people to buy color ink.  I'm OUT.  Switching my printer to another company and I'm switching my photo gear to Sony, which actually has better camera than Canon.  Goodbye CANON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  It was a nice run, but i WILL NOT BE FORCED TO SPEND MONEY FOR INK THAT IS NOT NECESSARY!!!!!!!!!
