Simple as that. With the VERY LIMITED control panel on the printer it says "Scan Local (USB)", I click the Start button and it says "Please wait momentarily" and then does nothing and returns to the same "Scan Local (USB)" message. This happens whether I put a page on the platen, or in the autoscan feeder.
I have the (not) USB cable connected, the one with two different ends, one of which is a usb connected to my desktop.

Serious question: is the PIXMA a worthless piece of **bleep**? There are other printers, which this does well. But if it does not scan it is not what I paid for.
@canon want to add anything to this?

Hello!
I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with your printer. To help the community assist you better, we need a bit more information:
- What is the exact model of your printer? The TR4700 is a family of printers. (It can usually be found on the top or front of the unit.)
- Are you seeing any error messages?
- Which version of Windows or macOS are you using?
- How do you *want* connect to your printer: via USB or Wi-Fi?
- Have you installed the Canon software and drivers from https://canon.us/setup
Any additional details you provide will help the community better understand your issue.

Exact model? I think that it is a TR4722, but there is no nameplate on the product other than "Canon" and "PIXMA" branding. I registered the printer/scanner.
No, no error messages, as I said in the original post, the "control panel on the printer it says "Scan Local (USB)", I click the Start button and it says "Please wait momentarily" and then does nothing and returns to the same "Scan Local (USB)" message. This happens whether I put a page on the platen, or in the autoscan feeder."
Windows 11
I want to connect the scanner to the PC, don't care how. Printing via wifi works, just not scanning. I have tried using wifi and the USB cable. Neither work.
Yes, I installed the drivers. I re-installed them when I ran into this issue. Still nothing.
Tried the support links but they take me on a circular foray through repetitive stuff that does not answer the simple question of how to scan a document. Hence coming here in the hopes that I can make this work. If not I want a refund and I'll buy something that functions.

Make sure you have the Canon software installed and not the Microsoft software. If your unit is a TR4722 (the model is on the front right corner) of the unit, you can get the software from here: https://canon.us/TR4722Setup
Once you've verified the correct software is installed, you should have the ability to initiate a scan, if your printer has a solid WiFi signal.
If you need one-on-one assistance, please get in touch with our support team. Verify your printer is registered at https://canon.us/account and call 800-OK-CANON (800-652-2666). Phone support is free while your device is still under warranty.

I'll leave aside the "this forum is not for any of those things" for now. It is literally one of the support options we are given, so I posted here hoping to crowd-source solution. Seems that I had to get cranky to generate a response.
So, I again installed the setup software. Done.
Still can't scan.
On the control panel I clicked on the Scanner Icon, the one with the open platen and rays coming from it.
That puts the "Scan Mode Wifi" with a few bars on the menu screen, and that immediately changes to "Scan Local (USB)"
When I click the "OK" button, it beeps and nothing happens.
When I click the Scanner icon, the control panel repeats the above, to "Scan Mode Wifi" message and then immediately changes to "Scan Local (USB)".
When I click the start button, whether "Black" or "Color", the same thing, first "Please wait momentarily" and then it does nothing and returns to the same "Scan Local (USB)" message.
So, what next? How can we make this thing scan?

Apologies - what I meant, and worded poorly, was that we cannot address refunds or sales questions here.
Make sure you're following the guidance HERE
Again, if this is an urgent support need, you will want to contact support directly - this community isn't for immediate support needs. Support is available weekdays from 9am to 6pm (ET) at 800-OK-CANON.

Cool, figured it out.
I had to dig into my Program Files (x86), open the Canon folder, then the IJ Scan Utility folder. There I selected the "SCANUTILITY" application, double-clicked on it and that brought up the scan menu. Selected the document and the scanner feed engaged.
For simplicity sake I have added a shortcut to my desktop to access this quickly. Right-Click on your desktop, click "New" then select "Shortcut", then browse to the location, select the file you want to shortcut to, and done.

Fixed. See below. The documentation needs to be a little bit clearer on how this works. It should not take a software QA person to decode it. This is a consumer product.

I'm glad it's working how you need it to, and I'm sorry it was confusing - it's not supposed to be.
In the future (because updates can sometimes break things), you can get the most current version of your software and drivers in your Canon Account without having to hunt around for it. Just log into the account at https://canon.us/account and you'll have easy access to everything you need! ☺️
