Error sound when i enter first character ("1") of wifi password for MX470 printer

When I try to enter the wifi password to connect my MX470 to my wifi router, I get an error sound when i enter the first character, which happens to be a "1". All other characters are accepted silently but of course the password doesnt work without the "1". SOOOO frustrating!

I'm not sure how the OS is relevant, as the password is being entered directly on the printer.  i run Windows 7 on my computer.
