Canon PIXMA MX432 w/ Windows 8

Hello

I'm hoping someone here can help.  I bought a newer laptop a few months ago which has Windows 8 on it.  Ever since then, my scanner option hasnt worked.  I can copy and print just fine.  I dont use the fax option but do want to be able to use my scanning option

when I push the button for the scanner it says "please wait a while" and then nothing.  Or it may say Scanner (local USB).  I've unplugged it completely, both the power cord and the USB cord and replugged them in. and it still doesnt work

it doesnt look like I have any CD for it either if I had to reinstall software. 

What can be done so the scanner works?

Sometimes the Windows scanner doesn't work for my 8.1. In that case I just use the scanner from Canon's software.

Why in gods name would i buy a piece of hardware from a hardware company that has a hardware button with the words "scan" on it and then use some janky software some monkeys over at Canon whipped together in 20 minutes.
