CLI-281 XL cartridges: way more life than printer software claims

On my TS8320 I was printing holiday cards in photo quality. When the black 281 XL cartridge told me it was empty I chose to ignore the warning (this is the red X warning). My cards had two astro pictures with a lot of black. I was able to print more than 20 additional cards. Same results for a cyan 281 XL cartridge.

I wonder if the software is incapable of accurately estimating the remaining ink in XL cartridges or (more likely) Canon is just using the bogus red X warning as a way of selling more ink.

I have found that the low-ink warnings come W-A-A-A-A--Y before the ink is exhausted. Same for laser printer toner warnings. Is this trickery on Canon's part? Who knows. Just keep printing until you can SEE that the ink is exhausted!
