I purchased a new TR4720 printer today at my local Best Buy store. During the setup, when it was installing drivers on my desktop computer, I kept getting an error message. After several tries, I scanned the QR code for support that was printed on the information that came with the printer.
After I provided my phone number to an online Canon screen, a technician called me. He asked for permission to remotely access my computer, which I granted. He had me start a remote support app built into Windows 10 and started checking some things on my computer. After a while, he told me that he needed to escalate the problem to "his supervisor" (or some such term) which I agreed to.
Another person took over the phone call and said that he had to run some diagnostics. Some suspicious-looking screens appeared showing what appeared to be driver names and he then told me that my computer was infected and all of my drivers were disabled. I became very suspicious and asked him how the computer could be running normally for years if that were true. He then became rude and offensive and said something like "if you know more than me then fix it yourself" At that point, I was convinced that I'd been handed off to a hacker not associated with Canon. I ended the phone call and turned off my PC.
Later I turned it back on and disconnected from the internet and local network, then ran Windows diagnostics. It does not appear that any malware was installed, but I'm still nervous.
I hope someone at Canon reads this and takes note since the apparently malicious contact was initiated by contacting Canon support using the QR code that came with the printer.
