I'm trying to run the EOS utility to pair my macbook with my EOS 80D using the EOS utility. When I get to the pairing step, I receive a message 'Firewallalertmsg', and I cannot proceed. Running OS X on my 12 yr. old macbook.

OS X encompasses Mountain Lion > El Capitan.
You should verify the version of the EOS Utility is correct for your OS.
The firewall is pretty much the same. Open system preferences, then Security and Privacy. Now look at the tabs General, Firewall and Privacy and allow what is being blocked.
