A few weeks ago, I finaly took the plunge and upgraded (??) from my 5D MK iv to an R5 MK 2.
I was reluctant to lose the built in GPS in the 5D but thought I could get by with using the Canon Connect app on my Android phone to geotag my photos on the R5 MK2.
Unfortunately, this has not been the case. Very disapointed to report that no matter what I do, the Canon Connect app in combination with the R5 randomly fails to geotag properly - sometimes no data at all and sometimes just very inacurate.
Does anybody know of any alternatives or fixes ( I believe the dedicated GPS hotshoe unit is discontinued now )?
Many thanks

Yes, the dedicated hotshoe (Canon GP-E2) is discontinued, but you can still find them on the secondhand market. You'll also need the adapter (Canon AD-E1) but I can confirm that if you have both, it works with the R5 II.

Thanks for the confirmation that the GP-E2 works well on the R5 II.
I'm hoping that Canon will launch a new GPS unit that will work directly with the camera rather than have to buy a second hand unit and an adaptor - fingers crossed that Canon has something new in the pipeline ???

Also, just found another article that suggests the GP-E2 will work directly on the R5-MK2 without the Multi-Shoe Adapter:

QUOTE: The GP-E2 works just fine in the R5m2, without an adapter, locks nicely in place (with lever). Was the 2nd thing I tried.

Confirmed: the camera recognizes the GP-E2 both with and without the AD-E1 adapter. I tested on the R5m2 and the R7.

The plot thickens !!!! Extract from the R5 MK2 manual page 74:
GPS Receiver GP-E2 requires adapter AD-E1 sold separately !!!

“ GPS Receiver GP-E2 requires adapter AD-E1 sold separately !!! “
You need to use it. Microsoft-SD cards seem to work just fine until they don’t.
I know that the adapter helps preserve the weather sealing and protects the extra pin connectors. They seem to always be in short supply. The cost is negligible.
