Does Auto Gamma always take the full (uncropped) photo into account while calculating its values ?
I'd like it to automatically adjust for the cropped version of the photo instead.
For example, I was cropping a picture to remove a strong background light and Auto Gamma keeps giving me the same results no matter what part of the photo I crop.

This is the way DPP works, it always works with the whole image ignoring the crop when doing the auto gamma. If you make a test image where you photograph a black and white sheet of paper side by side so each is 50% of the frame, then do an auto gamma there will be no change if you then crop to only the black or white sections.

I hope some of this might be helpful.
I suggest that instead of using "auto" gamma, use the tone curves: https://cam.start.canon/en/S002/manual/html/UG-04_EditImage_0040.html#EditImage_0060_3
And adjust dynamic range, shadows, highlights, unsharp mask, white balance, and saturation after cropping.
