Hello Canon Community,
I hope this huge read that is in front of you all finds you all well.
I am new to this fun… the Canon Message board that is…. Hopefully i am in the correct goup.
Here is my situation….
I have a Canon EOS RA. I am the original owner (Nov 2020 purchase). Within the last week I have bought the BG-E22 and it came with the PD-E1 USB Power Adapter. Here is what I am experiencing with it. To add I have had two BG-E22s (from two separate vendors) in the last week as I thought the first one was faulty returned it and then bought a second one. One from BH Photo and the other from ebay… yes roll your eyes…
I connect the BG-E22 to the camera. Here are the starting facts:
I am using or have three Canon LP-6EN batteries. They are older batteries (bought when the camera was bought) but they do fully charge in the Canon LC-E6 battery charger and they do last as long as one would expect them to as if they were new batteries. So, I am saying they don’t need recharging after 100 photos are taken…
The Power Switch on the EOS RA is in the OFF position
Canon EOS RA firmware is V1.8.0
Canon BG-E22 firmware is V1.1.0
When the batteries are in the BG-E22 they have been in the 45-70% charged range as indicated on battery menu which is found in the maintenance menu. I have tried all the combinations of the three batteries. I had seen on a Google search that the batteries had to be below 90% charge before the BG-E22 would charge them. I am not sure if that is true or not, but they are below 90% charge value when in the BG-E22.
When the PD-E1 USB power adapter is used the charging lamps/lights/LEDs on the rear of the BG-E22 do not illuminate. When I remove the USB cable and look at the Maintenance menu Battery Information no charging has occurred.
When using the BG-E22 all the buttons and dials work as expected. They respond just like the corresponding buttons and dials on the camera body itself. The shutter button on the BG-E22 works as expected as well. I do have the shutter button set up for back focus and BG-E22 works as expected in this configuration.
The BG-E22’s On/Off switch works as expected. As in when in the ON position the BG-E22 buttons operate and when in the OFF position the BG-E22 buttons do not operate. Whether in the ON or OFF position the battery charging issue is the same.
According to Canon documentation (assuming that I understand what I read) the PD-E1 should be able to charge a LP-6EN batter in the camera body. The Access Lamp does not illuminate and I think that I read that it should go green if the battery is being charged. Yes, the batter door was on camera body when I preformed this test.
To add a data point the two PD-E1 USB Power Adapter(s) did charge up my GoPro with no issue.
To sum up the BG-E22 will operate as expected when using all the buttons and dials. The camera body will see the batteries ( either with battery in the camera body or when using the BG-E22) when viewing the "Battery Info.” in the Maintenance Menu submenu 3. I have done the “Delete info.” for each battery within the Battery Info. window ( this is found when you select “INFO” at the bottom of the screen of the Battery Info. window).
I have reloaded the camera EOS RA body and BG-E22 firmware even though the firmware versions for each were the most recent per the Canon web page for each.
So, everything works…. almost…. What am I missing? Is there some hidden menu selecting that I need to toggle? Is there a button pressing combination that needs to be done? or what?
Thanks for your help all.

“ According to Canon documentation (assuming that I understand what I read) the PD-E1 should be able to charge a LP-6EN batter in the camera body. “
You cannot charge a battery inside a grip.

I am not understanding your reply as you stating “…grip.", but using a quote from the write up that references the camera body. Can you provide evidence to support your comment/reply?

Do you understand the issue?
Here’s a link. The battery is supposed to be inside the camera, not inside a battery grip.

oh yes i get it… so to be clear …. initial problem was the battery grip with TWO batteries… i am not a dolt. what you are commenting on is what i said is that a battery in the CAMERA BODY the EOS R or RA should be be “chargeable”. this was an additional data point for all to ponder. instead of asking if I was trying to charge one battery in the grip you made an assumption that i was. when i never had made such a comment

The EOS R manual page 586 is the source of this information...
You can charge either a single or two LP-E6N or LP-E6NH battery in the BG-E22 grip when using the USB Power Adapter PD-E1.
If any of the batteries in the grip is an LP-E6 type, neither battery will charge. Please note that several high capacity batteries from third parties claim to be or have labels to say they are compatible with LP-E6N or LP-E6NH type, but are identified by the camera as LP-E6, and so cannot be charged.
Any LP-E6 original battery or one that is actually identified as LP-E6 by the camera will not charge in the camera, and if one is present in the grip neither grip battery will charge.
If the batteries that the camera identifies as LP-E6N or LP-E6NH are in the grip and only this type, then charging can happen.
The battery model identified by the camera is found in the battery info page. Here's how each of the different batteries are identified by the camera.
CANNOT CHARGE IN-CAMERA
CAN CHARGE IN-CAMERA
CAN CHARGE IN-CAMERA

I stand corrected. I wonder which battery charges? Can you use the camera during charging.

The manual just says that if two batteries are in the grip they will charge one at a time. I think it charges the least charged battery first, but can't test this myself.
EOS R, Ra, R5, R6 you cannot use the camera, as this will stop the battery charging. However the later models like EOS R6 Mark II and EOS R5 Mark II can be operated and charged at the same time.
