ZR300 won't take cards larger than 256MB

I have been trying to move to a larger capacity memory card for storage in my ZR300 camcorder, but every one that I try larger than the original 256MB card returns a Card Error message. I have tried inserting the cards as is, and also formatted the cards before inserting them, but nothing has worked. Is there a limitation in the ZR300, restriction on card types, or something else that I am missing? What gives?

This old camera may just not have the ability to manage a higher-capacity card.

Just FYI, I have successfully loaded, and the ZR300 accepted, both a 1G and a 2G card.

The ZR300 is limited to SD and SDHC cards (2GB or less), so it won't natively recognize SDXC cards. I know some manufacturers used to make their cards backward-compatible. I don't know if that's still the case, since the devices that require that functionality are all pretty old by now.
