We want to buy a XA11 for use in our manufacturing plant. We'd like the option of recording from the camera to a portable hard drive. It isn't clear from the product specs that are on-line if you can do that. Reached out to Canon product support and they couldn't understand why I couldn't just keep switching SD cards. Can anyone assist on this one?

No, you cannot just plug in an ordinary HD and record on it. Cameras don't have disc control software. The usb port is for connecting to a computer. You can record to an external recorder via HDMI. Have a look at the Atomos range of recorders. Some of them take an HD in a caddy.
