hss with off camera flash

I'm shooting with the canon 80d and just bought the 580ex II speedlight and im using pocketwizard triggers( minitt 1 & flextt 5). is anyone familiar with this set up that could tell me why hss is sporatic at best? 8-9 shots out of 10 have speeds faster than 250th/sec.

What mode are you in?

Did you try manual to force the shutter speed?

Camera always in manual. The flash I've tried ttl and manual and either way I might get 2 out of ten good shots. I'm doing the calibration shot 160th like pocket wizard says and it sometimes takes five or six shoot before the flash will fire.
