I own a rebel SL3 and am looking for an external flash for it. Is the Speedlite 430EX compatible with an SL3?

430EX

Yes its compatible. But the speedlite is not compatible with the speedlite control menu. All settings must be set on the speedlite itself. The camera will report "this menu cannot be displayed, Incompatible speedlite or speedlite's power is turned off." This is normal for an older speedlite mounted to a newer camera body to report. Nothing is wrong with the speedlite its functioning correctly. The speedlite control menu was implemented in newer cameras after that speedlite was released. Therefor you can't change speedlite settings from the camera menu.

All of Canon's EX speedlites, EL-1 & EL-100 speedlites are compatible with your camera. Newer speedlites released from 2008- present are fully compatible with the speedlite control menu. Speedlites starting with the 270EX, 430EX II & 580EX II were the first speedlites to support the speedlite control menu. Older speedlites are NOT compatible with the speedlite control menu. Certain speedlites have partial compatibility with the speedlite control menu to set Rear Curtain Sync, Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC), AF Assist Beam Firing, E-TTL II Meter & Flash Firing.
