Cave Rock was formed from a volcanic vent millions of years ago, with wave action of the higher-level Lake Tahoe carving its caves.  The site is sacred to the Washoe Tribe who called the lake "Da-ow-a-ga" and used the rock for spiritual ceremonies.  Later it became a transportation route with a trestle bridge in the 1860's and tunnels in 1931.  The area is now a state park and significant cultural site.  Climbing is banned to protect its sacred status.  According to Washoe, a great spirit created the cave to drain rising waters that threatened the people living nearby.

Hi Rick,

Actually, we had a mixture of weather.  Nice sunny weather in the mid 70s most days, except for one cloudy day with a bit of rain.  I was hoping to see the Kokanee salmon spawning which attract bears and raptors to feast on them.  However, this year they're running a little late and should be spawning from mid-October to November.  I'm planning on going back in mid to late October or early November.  The government shutdown has led Visitors Centers grounds being inaccessible, though some surrounding trails may remain open with limited amenities.  In any case I hope that things will be back to normal by mid to late October.  A reduced staff to no staff presence could impact safety and emergency response in the Lake Tahoe area and amenities at this time are very limited.  However, I'm ready with my bear spray and bear horn.  😁  Also because of the shutdown we're not getting reports regarding the kokanee spawning.  So, I am keeping my fingers crossed and searching bloggers to get up to date information.

Don't forget that we have a date set for November.  😉

Cheers,
Joe
