imageCLASS MF465dw II Trouble installing on macOS Monterey

Hello friends and neighbors!  My machine is a Dell acquisition; but my account manager there got promoted after my purchase.  So, I did not want to deal with a new staff.  However, I have both Windows 11 and Mac Monterey.  While the Windows 11 installation seems OK, I can't say the same for Mac.  Except for the fax driver, the Mac overrode the designated Canon driver and installed legacy drivers of its own.  The MF Toolbox displays and error message, "No available scanner found" when it decides to popup.  When I brought my laptop to the printer, being that it is across the room, it didn't seem to connect through a USB cable.  What is suspicious is that all the drivers have a 460 designation instead of 465.  Upon arrival, I tried adding the printer's URL.  That installed a generic driver.  Before I make drastic changes, I thought to ask here first.  Thank you all who patiently read this.  I could not flag this post with the model I purchased.

Greetings ,

Canon drivers for OSX Monterey are available for download.

  1. Based on your description, it sounds like you installed the printer using bonjour or airprint.  This will yield a legacy driver install with limited functionality.  There is nothing suspicious about drivers being labeled as 460.  This is the printer series designation.  The 465 is covered.  However, if you're not using the Canon drivers, you will have limited functionality and control.

I would suggest starting over.  First decide how you're going to connect the device, wired, wireless or USB?

Download the drivers from the support portal I referenced above.

Now remove the printer from your system. Open the printer and scanners applet, select the printer and use the minus (-) to remove the device.

Using Finder, open up your applications folder and uninstall all Canon drivers or utilities you or the system may have installed.  This is done by dragging the application to the trash can.

Important restart your system.

Next steps will depend on your connection method.  If you're going to use Wireless or Ethernet, I recommend you assign the printer a static IP on your router.  Once configured, restart the printer and confirm it's using this assigned IP.  You can do this on the printers LCD.

Next run the printer driver installer and the scanner utility.  This will ensure you're using the Canon drivers.

If you're going to use USB, run the installers and do not connect the printer to the USB port until prompted to do so by the print driver installation utility.

Note, You can always check to see what driver a printer is using under Mac OS by drilling down on the device properties and viewing the Use: field.

If you need further assistance, let us know. 🙂

shadowsports, I am glad to get a response, especially from such a happy looking couple!  I hope to connect over my wireless network, especially when the printer is across the room from the Mac computer.  I thought a temporary USB connection was necessary when the installation gets stubborn.  What is this MF Canon Toolbox supposed to do?  I have not been able to open it since it is looking for a scanner.  From the names of the drivers, which one should I download?  I want to make sure I have everything that came with this unit functional; but I don't know whether to go by the name or go by the size.  I found the Applications folder and got rid of Canon Utilities.  I am about to go into the Settings, Printers & Scanners and remove those drivers.  For all my attempts, I have plenty of them.

Earlier today I looked around the outside of this unit.  This came with a standard telephone cord, probably to accommodate a physical fax feature.  I have eFax, being a magicjackforbusiness customer.  However, I have a spare telephone receiver.  I thought this unit would have a jack for it.  Do you know whether there is one?  Then, on the door to the paper tray, there is a tiny vertical switch.  What is that for?  Thanks for the other instructions.

I hated to hit the Reply button; but there was no option to Edit the previous post.  Just now I added 1 to the current IP address.  For future reference, since I also have Windows 11, is changing the IP address easier there under Device Preferences?  Currently there are no Canon drivers under Printers & Scanners.  Referring back to the first post, connecting with a USB cable didn't do what I expected; it didn't find another driver.  For the IP address, I figured it out even though the manual's instructions didn't look like my unit's display.  I am about to download and install the first two of the drivers.  Someone removed the link you provided; but I already opened a tab there.  Hopefully, on a new IP address, this will work.

shadowsports, I could not again edit the former post; so I had to post this response anew.  Regardless, I would have started it with the words, "Good Grief."  Despite the prior steps, I became victim of the AirPrint Hijack!  An article says that the official Canon driver version should have 6 digits.  Mine says version 3.0.  What can you suggest?  The IP change took effect.  Is there any way of obtaining the correct driver through the unit's IP address?

Greetings,

I was responding to your request for Mac support since that was the system that you were having problems with.

Yes, there are two RJ-11 ports on the back of the machine. One for the fax line and one a telephone.

I suggest you bookmark this link as it's the user manual for your printer.  The page I've linked is specific to the fax connection. This is an online manual for the MF465Dw II from Canon, USA.

Typically when you set up a persistent device on a network, you should assign it a static IP.  If it happens to be a printer, you should install it as a TCP/IP device on any systems that will utilize it.

Using a static IP removes dependence on hostname resolution, airprint, bonjour, DNS, ARP, etc.  Devices are identified by their IP and bound to their MAC address.  This ensures consistent and reliable communication.  Set once and forget.

The device, typically a router on a consumer home network is the single source of truth.  It performs DHCP and NAT. Devices with an assigned IP address can always be found at their "destination IP". This is because the address isn't subject to change.

You can add a printer to a system using its IP address.  This is supported under Windows or Mac OS.  You can use Google and search for instructions.  Although optional, I suggest performing these steps to ensure reliability.

Honestly it's easier to remove and then reinstall the printer as a TCP/IP device under Windows.  You can add a new port (via IP) under the device properties and then check that box so it uses that protocol for communications, but many people get hung up in there and it's just easier if you do it from scratch.  It takes about the same amount of time, and once you're done, you have to reboot, then go back in and delete the WSD entry (web server device)  so your OS doesn't get confused.  MAC is the same way. I recommend a reboot after removing the device to ensure a clean on install.

I guess I will have to make a direct phone call to Canon unless Apple's forum has an answer.  This operation took too long for me to go through it again.  Maybe this worked after all.  By using the URL of the unit, the newly changed IP address, I found that the version number is 10.19.23; and it does not say AirPrint.  Thanks again.  I did that last change before reading your post above.  Later I will turn that printer around and install that receiver.  Funny, isn't it?  With VOIP so advanced, we are still dealing with these phone cords and hand-held receivers.  As far as I know, my last two apartments didn't even have wall phone jacks, which counts this one.  This Canon MF Toolbox works the same way it did before we arrived at a better installation.  What is it supposed to do?  I doesn't even appear in my Windows 11 Start Menu.
