Despite reinstalling the software multiple times, the "Cannot communicate with the scanner" error likely points to issues beyond just the software installation. Focus on the physical connection by trying a different USB cable and ensuring it's securely plugged directly into both the printer and computer, bypassing any hubs. Also, restart both your computer and printer. Temporarily disable your firewall and antivirus to see if they are interfering. If those don't work, try using the built-in Windows Scan app (if on Windows) or Image Capture (on macOS) as an alternative scanning method.
