Been a long time since I had my S1 so I need to ask is is a CF card or SD card? If SD have you inserted an SCHC? That camera may only recognize SD cards.

Try the SD memory card in a computer see if ot works there.
Look in the SD card slot see if there is anything in there. When you pulled the card out it was in the locked or unlocked postion? Maybe the lock tab is getting moved when you insert it
