When new canon powershot is turned on, back screen is black.

Black screen on back. Normal flash etc indoors.  However, no photo shows up on camera back, and a hand symbol, the palm, shows up at bottom of screen with "busy" beside it.  I cannot get th camera to take a picture.  (Have another Canon at home, this is granddaughters Christmas present.
