My daughter is just starting to pictures more with my canon powershot sx500is. It's old but still works good. What would be a good updated one of that camera? I know that the camera has. But she is looking for more zoom and Megapixels.

30x Optical Zoom with 24mm Wide-Angle Lens (35mm equivalent: 24–720mm

16.0 Megapixel sensor and Canon DIGIC 4

What is your overall budget?

While there are newer point-and-shoot Canon cameras, they really don't have a large increase in megapixels (all hovering around 20 MP).   One, the Canon PowerShot SX740 HS Digital does mention it has 40x optical zoom (35mm equivalent of 24mm to 960mm).

Cameras with higher resolution will be amongst the newer R-series cameras (24 MP or higher).  Though it would be expensive to have lenses that would provide the same zoom range.  Then again, you can end up with higher-quality images.

How about the Canon EOS Rebel T7 EF-S 18-55mm.

Canon's DSLRs are indeed another option, though the R-series cameras is the future.

The lens that comes with that Rebel T7 is only 18-55mm, so it will have far less zoom capability as the point-and-shoot.   As with the R-series cameras, Canon's DSLRs would also involve having to get multiple lenses to cover the full zoom range of the point-and-shoots.
