Did you mean:

Powershot SX170, too much noise

musicus
Contributor

I am getting a continual problem on my videos. Too much noise.

This can be seen here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xODkPppDbcU

'Noise" might not be the most accurate word - but what I mean

is the "activity" that is ever-present. I see this even when I use

spotlight on other vids. I am mostly concerned with indoor videos

with moderate lighting. Any ideas on aperture, ISO settings, HD, etc?

Thanks.

Hi musicus,

Thanks for checking in!

The suggestions on here from others have been valid points, in particular keeping the ISO as low as possible while still getting a proper exposure is one of the best things you can do on the camera side to reduce noise.

I will add that if you find yourself shooting more videos, you might think about upgrading to a camera with a larger image sensor like the PowerShot G1X Mark III, which has an APS-C CMOS sensor, like many of our DSLRs. Generally speaking, the larger the image sensor, the better the camera will be at capturing detail with less noise, especially in low-light conditions.

A newer processor can also help. The PowerShot SX170 IS uses our DIGIC 4 processor, while the G1X Mark III has our DIGIC 7 processor. To learn more about our G-series PowerShots, check out the link below:

Thanks. I am trying to make sure that my use of the word "noise" is correct so I have posted three examples:

This is zoomed not from Powershot but from iMovie.

Notice the "activity" on the right side of the piano (lower

R corner of the frame)

Within the first few seconds notice the "activity" during the

zoom. Zoom was done with iMovie.

I want to make sure that I have done everything possible on my Powershot

before I go out and spend big bucks on another camera. Do any of the above

videos appear to be visually unacceptable to you? Of course I know they could all be

sharper. Thanks.
