PowerShot A590 IS how to transfer photos

We have a power shot digital camera that has pictures on it but we can't get to the transfer menu to get the pictures onto my laptop. The support has ended so we are hoping someone on this forum can help us get the pictures off the camera.

What have tried? What computer do you have? 
A card reader - which your computer may already have- is the easiest.

I’ve used the USB cable to connect the camera to my laptop - which has windows 11 installed. 
we thought about card reader, so I guess we’ll purchase one and try that.

So, what happened /didn't happen when you used the USB cable?  The camera should appear as a drive.

We could not get the transfer menu to appear - so we could not get the photos off the camera. 
we did purchase a card reader - got that today and that worked.

There ISN'T a TRANSFER MENU.   The camera appears as a DRIVE in Windows File Manager. It has the camera name. You open it and there will be a DCIM folder. That's where your pictures are.  You're seeing the same thing using the card reader. You open the card reader and there's the DCIM folder.

The documentation showed a transfer menu. 
But the camera did not show up as a drive when connected the cable either. The card reader worked and we did see the DCIM folder and the pictures within another folder under that.

The transfer menu would t be a part of the Canon software that you can install. It doesn't happen just by connecting camera to computer.

If the camera doesn't mount with a USB cable, it could be because the cable is bad or the USB port on the camera is bad.  But since the card reader is working, it doesn't matter. Be happy.
