Display only works with custom modes

My camera display and view work just fine in C1, C2 modes. When I  adjust the dial to anything else, everything goes black including the menu and function keys. 

Also, when I turn to Auto mode I can hear 3 extremely faint knocks (just once). I need to hold it up against my ear to hear them.

Any ideas?

Sorry about that. I have the sx40 hs. It turned out to be the DISP button    I got my answer after digging further through all of the posts.  I am so glad I found this site!

what model camera is it? Meanwhile you can try resetting to defaults thru the settings menu just in case some setting is messing you up.
