PowerShot A590 LCD screen not working right

When aiming at my subject, the screen does not show the subject, it shows a black screen.  It may show the subject for a quick moment, but then returns to the black screen.  The icons i am seeing around the perimeter of the screen are: ISO, a large letter L and it flashes off so fast, I cannot read what the other icons are.  Also, after I take a picture, the screen flips  and shows all kinds of numbers/data.  Can someone tell me what is going on with my  camera?

Are the pictures properly exposed?

Try to reset the camera to its defaults:

Thank you, I think I happened upon that solution.  I think I'm good, for now at least.  Thank you for the instructions, I'm saving it for future reference.

Camera was good for a few days however, I'm again trying to reset to default & when I press "OK" to proceed with resetting to default, the progress bar says "busy" and there is no movement along the progress bar. Also, when I take a picture, on a few occasions, the camera goes crazy, shuffling the image over and over.  Is it time to replace may camera?  I hope not!
