Upgrade recomdations from EOS Rebel T7

Cuelloc1

I've had my Rebel T7 for about 2 and a half years now and while it has been a good camera, I feel I need to upgrade from it. I have thought about getting the EOS R, but I've mainly been filming sports and I've heard it isn't the best for that. I also looked at the R6 mark II, but they are too expensive. I'm looking for something in the $800-$1,300 range. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Cuelloc1, I'm not sure where you are located but if you are in the states it's worth watching the Canon Refurbished site for a body. I have purchased several items and if you do a search you will find many others have with excellent results. There is currently an R8 within your budget and it you could stretch it a bit an R6 MkII. I own the R6 MkII and would have to say that it has performed excellently at it's price point.

One big benefit, Canon provides a one-year limited warranty on its factory-refurbished cameras when purchased from Canon USA. This warranty covers both parts and labor on refurbished products A link provided below to the refurb site.

Hi Marc,

Thank you for your help I appreciate it! I am based in the states as well! I was thinking about the R8 and I saw like you said is within my budget. I want to also ask if I need to use an adapter for the current lenses I have. I have a 18-200 and a 18-50 kit lens. Do I need to also get an adapter to use it on the R8?

Also, I was planning on getting a 24-70 mm lens as well. Am I able to get a refurbished one with the factory warranty as well?

Hi Cuelloc1,

Most EF mount lenses will work but I believe the two lenses you mention are EF-S lenses which would not work on a full frame R series body. It would be best if your budget allows to begin your move to RF glass. Also, there is a
Refurbished EOS R8 RF24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens Kit - 1349.00

Refurbished EOS R8 RF24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens Kit

As to the question on the 24-70mm lens, anything can be placed into the Canon refurbished market place but I don't remember ever seeing the RF 24-70mm in stock. And all Canon Refurbished Marketplace Camera's and Lenses are supported with a 1 year limited warranty.

Canon refurbished lenses come with a one-year limited warranty, similar to new products. This warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. The warranty is provided by Canon USA.
Details:

One-Year Limited Warranty:
Canon refurbished lenses are covered by a one-year limited warranty, which is the same as for new Canon products.

Coverage:
The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use

If budget is a concern, the RF24-240 is a pretty good lens (not real fast, needs some light) to start out with your transition to your R series body. It's price new is $900. It does a real nice job for a lens at this price point, is great for travel and easily an all day carry setup.

It would cover the range of your current EF-S lenses that you own now so that could be a good option.

If you have a local Canon authorized dealer near you it may be worth trying to trade those two lenses to reduce the expense on the RF24-240. And these do show up in the Canon Refurbished Marketplace once in a while but you would not have the ability to trade.

Hi, Marc,

Thank you for the insight! Is there a camer you particularly recommend? It doesn't have to be any of the ones discussed previously, as long as it stays in the budget range. I'll admit I've been having trouble deciding haha.

Hey Cuelloc1, given your budget I believe that the R8 would be a great fit. Be aware that Canon just had a "Tariff Adjustment" in their pricing and the setup I suggest went up a couple hundred dollars. It is still available and just waiting for your to pull the trigger. Link below, and it carries a one year limited warranty.

Hey Marc,

I see what you mean. I saw it jump in price by a few hundred when I checked recently and it was cheaper before that.

One more question. Should I invest in a lens adapter since the 18-200 wouldn't fit in the R series cameras? I would just hate to have to buy new lenses to accommodate the new camera, especially if I can avoid it with an adapter. That said if I have to buy it, I will

Cuelloc1, that one is a tough call. I own and use several EF mount lenses with the Canon adapter. I get good results but in the beginning the lenses were buggy and each required a firmware update to eliminate focus issues.

Many of my EF lenses were much more current then then your EF 18-200mm which was released in 2008. If you move forward the result could be that the lens has communications challenges that plague the older EF lenses. It working well for any lack of a better term is/would be a crap shoot. I looked and it doesn't appear that there is a firmware update available for the lens which makes me a bit more concerned. If you search are forums I believe you will find that others had challenges with this specific lens on an R body.

If you decide to try it get the inexpensive EF-RF adapter, I tested several 3rd party adapters and the performance was just poor. They write their own communications protocols, Canon does not supply them to unauthorized manufacturers. The lenses always searched before grabbing focus, the Canon was pretty pure.

The Canon adapter is $129 new, for an additional $300 you could grab the  RF24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM $429.99 and start building your RF stable. The performance would be much better that the EF lens.

Personally given the age of the lens I would not do it but it's always a good idea to stay within your budget. My thoughts but you have to make the call.

Hi cuelloc1,

Here's the thing with using EF-S lenses on your full frame EOS R8 body.  EF-S lenses can be adapted, however, since they are designed for a camera with a smaller APS-C sensor, the image circles that they project is smaller than the full frame sensor in the R8.  This effectively reduces the resolution your camera is capable of capturing.  In this configuration, your 24 megapixel camera will only capture at 9.3 megapixels.  This is not typically desirable.  This may not matter if all you plan to use the pictures for is social media.  However, if you're looking for higher resolution prints, you'll want to use EF or RF lenses on your full frame body.  If you have more questions about this, we'll be happy to help answer them for you.

One other thing I should mention.  Adapted EF/EF-S lenses do not always perform to the same standards as an RF lens.  Depending on their age, they may not focus quite as fast, track subjects as well or deliver the higher frame rates RF lenses are capable of.  This is not true in every case but the communication standards are different and thus performance can vary.  🙂
