Help choosing between R6II and R7

and
Apprentice

I'm very much a hobbyist and interested in taking photos of my kids' outdoor and indoor sports (namely gymnastics). I recently dusted off a very old Canon Rebel XS. I invested in a 70-200mm f2.8 as well as a 70-300 f4-5.6. I'm still using the older body because I wanted to prove to myself that I would actually take the time and the effort to learn and improve before investing in a new camera body too. I think I'm there, so I'm now in the market to upgrade the body as well.

Up to this point I've been using it primarily to shoot my kids' outdoor sports, but I will soon need to shoot my kids' indoor gymnastics meets. I like the low light performance of the R6 Mark ii but I'm cautious because I'd be sacrificing some reach.

I'd love any input anyone would be able to offer choosing between these two models, given those factors.

Greetings ,

For the type of photography you want to do, I recommend the R6 Mark II.  Your lenses are full frame, no reason not to use them on a full frame camera.  The R6 Mark II is superior to the R7 in ISO, AF performance and light gathering capability. I would think a 70-200 would allow you to get close enough to the action?  This would be my preferred lens for basketball, soccer and football shot from the sideline on that side of the field or court.  I think it would work great for gymnastics too. If you decide you need that extra reach a lens with a f2.8 aperture will allow the R7 to perform at its maximum capability indoors.

You're going to need an EF to EOS R adapter to use your lenses with the new body.  I own both of those lenses and adapted them to my R5 C for a period of time and they both work perfectly on a mirrorless body.
