What about using the cable you got when you bought the camera? Or try a different card reader.

I tried putting the card back in the camera to view and said format to use

I mean that you shouldn't use that card reader at all after you have recovered the files.

When I got the same issue in Windows I just mounted the card in Ubuntu and downloaded the files instead. Ubuntu also wanted me to format the card but I ignored that.

Hi, Larry. This must be frustrating.

Here are a few potential causes and troubleshooting steps:

  1. Card Reader: Try a different SD card reader to rule out compatibility issues.
  2. Firmware: Ensure your EOS R7 has the latest firmware. Visit the Canon support site to download and install any available updates.
  3. SD Card: Test with a different SD card to see if the issue persists.
  4. File System: While formatting in-camera should resolve this, verify the card is formatted to exFAT for optimal compatibility, especially with larger file sizes.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, further diagnosis may be needed.

Visit Canon Support for more help.

Importing from the card to LR doesn’t make sense, to me.  Once you put the card back in the camera KR cannot access the files.  Once you format the card, poof, all your files are gone.

You should copy the files off the card, and then import the copies to LR.
