Can anyone recommend a external mic for a Canon T4i

Just a 'standard' shotgun mic? The Rode VideoMic Pro or Sennheiser MKE-400 are pretty popular.
If you have a Beachtek or juicedLink, then there are XLR shotgun options.

+1 on the Rode Video Mic - its a good starter.

What do you mean by XLR extender?

Ah, its an XLR 'adapter'. If you don't know what it is, you don't have much use for it.
If you get a product like a Beachtek or JuicedLink in the future, you'd use it with that. Here's something to read when you're ready to take the next step with learning about the audio side of things: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/30/867257
