Newbie help - EOS Rebel SL3 "Apply Effects" Message

SMH,

Okay I finally decided to go with the Canon SL3 and I'm running into something that is probably so basic it'll give the forum some chuckles.

I have the shooting mode turned to AV+.

After about 3-4 seconds after taking a picture the screen changes from the shot I just took to a new screen asking "apply effects after shooting?"  How do I turn this function off so that I can keep the screen of the shot I just took?

Have you experimented with speedlite photography yet. To see how your pictures will come out. Canon's E-TTL algorithm works differently depending on what mode your shooting in. In Full Automatic and other Semi Auto Modes. Flash is all treated as Fill Flash ONLY not main light. In Manual Mode flash is treated as main light NOT Fill Flash. In order to change flash settings this must be done in the speedlite control menu. Since the EL-100 lacks on speedlite controls. Newer higher end speedlites offer and LCD screen to change settings along with support for the speedlite control menu. Your camera is classified as a "Type A" camera and also supports E-TTL II. E-TTL II is a revised version of the original E-TTL algorithm that was released in 1995. There is NO such thing as an E-TTL II speedlite. All of Canon's EX or EL speedlites support both. Its the camera body that uses E-TTL or E-TTL II.

Hi again Blair:
I don't do product photography, but if I was getting started I would look to You Tube - a simple search there brought up an impressive list of lighting solutions: product photography lighting - YouTube.  I would suggest browsing several of these for ideas.

Thanks for your time on this and the other advice you've given me. You guys are the best!

Your camera is adverse to blown highlights. The camera mainly "sees" things as gray. With a lot of bright white. The camera will ALWAYS underexpose. The camera believes that it's too bright. So you'll need to dial in exposure compensation. Or if you're in manual mode overexpose the picture. You need to expose to the right. To get the correct exposure.

Thank you kind sir for this and your previous answers. I really do appreciate you taking the time out to respond.

I see what you mean. I'm going to keep investigating this! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.IMG_0410.jpg

That's why we have exposure compensation in Semi Automatic modes including Auto ISO in Manual Mode. Then you can overexpose in Manual Mode without using Auto ISO. Are you using continuous modeling lights. Or are you using soft box strobes. If you're using soft box strobes are they compatible with Canon's E-TTL flash system. Or are these manual strobe flashes where you set the flash power.

The Soft boxes are continual. I have a EL-100 flash on the camera but haven't tried that yet!

Thanks again for sharing your wisdom. I will try your suggestions out.

If you want bright white backgrounds, put the brighter light close to the background and use the dimmer light for the subject. You may need more than 2 lights to get even exposures across the whole background. It will take lots of trial and error, and you will master it quicker if you just use Manual mode.
