Lens upgrade advice for R8

srengdahl

Looking for upgrade lens advice.  I currently have canon 100-400 lens but I don’t feel like it has quite enough zoom to get across the field and challenging to take up close pictures as I need to often change out the lens.

Typically shooting youth sports (soccer and hockey).

Greetings,

For these two shooting scenarios you will need two lenses.  For additional reach, consider the RF 100-500, RF 200-800 or the Sigma or Tamron 150-500 C or G2.

For a wider angle everyday walk around lens, you might consider the RF 24-105, RF 24-70 or RF 28-70.  The 24-105 comes in a f4~7.1 variable aperture, and a f4 L constant aperture.  The 24-70 is an f2.8 L.  The 28-70 can be had in a f2.8 L or f2.0.

The lenses mentioned all range in price from less expensive to more expensive.  You can choose depending on your budget.  If you'd like to save a little money, you can look at Canon refurbished or the used market.  If you buy used, make sure you buy from an authorized Canon dealer.  Getting a warranty and right to return is important.

All the lens @shadowsports noted will give you nice range and produce outstanding images. I've shot all but the Tamron but the G2 which is an excellent lens. A couple things to point out the Sigma or Tamron 150-500mm will need an EF to RF adapter and the Sigma may need a firmware update. Also,I don't believe the Tamron 150-500 wasn't offered in G2.

There is also the Sigma and Tamron EF150-600mm which are still widely available but at a bit higher expense. The Tamron is offered in G2 and most would say it is a better lens. You will still need the adapter and Sigma firmware update but you have a couple more options.

Thanks Marc, that was actually a typo.  It should have been 150- 600 but autocorrect got the best of me.

it seems like you don’t have a lens problem as much as you may have a shooting location problem.
