LCD screen has gone blank

I received the Rebel t4i for Christmas. It's been working great until today. The lcd screen no longer shows any information. If I press any of the setting buttons (ISO, etc), nothing shows up. It worked fine this past weekend.

I report that without the info above I could have looked forever to find the tiny unmarked square between the eyecup and the hot shoe. And who would ever figure that it turns off the screen? Mine is an SL1. The design is like an adventure game.

Hello, my Canon EOS Rebel XS's LCD is not displaying anything, on all modes. I have tried removing the battery and SD, cleaning the lens, but no luck. When I turn it on I can still hear the shutter sound and it does flash, the viewfinder does work and always says busy, at one point the LCD turned on and showed the settings interface and I picked it up and showed someone, but then the LCD went back to a black blank screen and I have not been able to get anything to appear on the LCD since. Could I get some help? 🙂 Thank you.

As I wrote initially, on my Rebel there was a tiny unmarked square switch between the hot shoe and the eye cup. I had somehow pushed it when the eye cup shifted. The result was a black screen. Pushing it turned the screen on again. That's just my experience and discovery. I hope I remember it.

Thank you for replying. However the Canon EOS Rebel XS has nothing between the hotshoe and eyecup 😞 so there's nothing for me to push or move. I still don't know why the LCD isn't displaying, but thanks anyway!

It is probably dead in the water.  It is not worth repairing.  Try the HDMI cable suggestion that was given above.  It will not fix the problem, but it can help narrow down the problem.

I think it is time to update your Rebel XS.

I understand your desperation. It caused me to go back and double-check my previous statements, based on a discovery long ago. My camera is an early SL1. It does have a small (4x7 mm) rectangular switch centered between the rubber part of the eyecup and the hot shoe. I did not find it documented anywhere and have no idea of its function(s). It might relate to a 90 degree viewer attachment which I know nothing of. I know you have a different camera. In desperation, maybe yours somewhere has a switch related to whatever the function on mine is.

ScottyP you are more than fantastic...I have searched and read manuals and online posts so much, and gotten nowhere and still had the same problem.

I have and love my Canon T5i, and then one day it just quit showing the settings and picture in the monitor after just taking the picture...EVERYTHING else worked fine, i verified the LCD screen was working everywhich way 'except'..!!..

I had no idea that a little bit of dust could/would cause the screen NOT to show the picture that was just taken...HOWEVER, after reading your post took my dust free rag and cleaned/wiped the entire camera body/lens with TLC..!!..and dang if it didn't start working again...thank you so very much.

I know your original post was quite old, but believe me, it is still relevant..!!..one lesson i won't forget for a long time..

I had this problem too. If the Canon eyecup (the rubber peice that slides on and off the viewfinder) slides up a little bit, the screen will not work. Just push the eyecup down and into place and the screen will function again

The only way my T3i LCD continuously works is in Video mode. It will light up when you turn off the camera and also when you press the shutter button (currently stuck in delay mode). Pressing any other button has no effect on the display.

Thank you Scott...my eyecup had shifted slightly and that was my problem...may have never noticed that...thanks for the tip!
