for the life of me, I cannot find info about this yellow/brown icon which appears when I push focus (back button).  Any help would be appreciated.

It's the lens or (or adapter if you have the control ring adapter) control ring, and implying that your exposure will move up or down 1/3 stop each "step" (as there are no clicks) with the control ring.

Yep, you will notice an icon next to your ISO, F stop and aperture on the LCD. Your exposure compensation is using the lens control ring.

Those icons display to let you know which quick access dial is used to adjust the settings. Each can be changed in your menu settings. Open your menu, select the Custom Functions (orange camera icon), select Custom Functions (orange C.Fn), and then choose Customize buttons or Customize dials.

Thank you both. I do have the adapter but the version without the control ring. I gather it still shows the icon even when a control ring isn't present, correct?

It will because if you mount an RF lens or capable adapter the camera is set up to use it for exposure compensation. You can adjust it or possibly turn it off in the menu if you wish.

And glad we can help!

Thanks again. I recognized all the other icons because I used them regularly. I appreciate the quick response.
