Hi, I've had my R6 MKii for just over a year and I just noticed an odd and seemingly redundant feature on my camera: Airplane mode. The camera already has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth that can be enabled. On page 840 of the manual it states "You can temporarily disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functions." Aren't those already disabled when I disable them? And the word 'temporary' implies that one shouldn't have it in Airplane mode all the time. Why? I bought this camera to be a camera, not a wireless device. I also read that when Airplane mode is off, it can be a drain on the battery because its in wireless search mode, even when turned off! Seems like a crazy feature to ever have in "off mode" except when wireless is desired. I'd appreciate any insights.

I totally agree with you. I guess Canon in their infinite wisdom enables it full time is because so many connections rely in the wireless that they have decided to have it on all the time. It would be good if one could turn it off completely. Airplane mode does turn all the wireless off but it would be nice if there was just an on off tab.

On my EOS R5, airplane mode seems to make the battery last longer.

I believe airplane mode remembers the connections, and automatically reconnects. disabling remembers the connections, but doesn’t automatically reconnect. 🧐
Think of it like this. One is Pause, and one is Stop.

johnrmoyer and Waddizzle nailed it, airplane mode will allow you to shut off both with a single stroke and it does extend the battery life. All four of my bodies are always on airplane mode unless I want/need to connect. When I turn it off my connections reestablish right away.
I believe the option for bluetooth and Wifi are just that, the option to physically shut one off and leave the other enabled. Personally I like choices and understand why Canon took this path.
