Like many people, I rate my images in post, not in camera. It seems a shame to limit a valuable button to just Rating tasks. Can it be customized to include other things? I would love to use it to toggle between Mechanical and Electronic shutter. Thank you!

Unfortunately, the EOS R5 programmability of the RATE Button is limited to:
1. Setting image Rating (obviously)
2. Recording voice memos
3. Playing voice memos
4. Protecting or Clearing Image Protection
5. Erasing Images
See Manual (Rate Button Functions) pp.568
However, the Customize Buttons Menu (Manual pp. 814) can assign alternate functions for the following buttons:
Shutter (half-press)
Multi Controller
Movie Button
Mode
AF-ON
AE-Lock
AF-Point
DOF Preview
and for some Canon Lenses even the function of the AF-Stop Lens Button can be customized.

Old thread but still current, as the R5 II has the same "issue".
I'd really like to hear from someone at Canon the reason why wasting a button like this! Why can't we make it work also while shooting? Such a shame
I would not expect such silly limits on an almost €5k camera.
