Canon EOS 2000D (first version) - Compatible flash trigger for studio strobe?

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for some advice regarding my Canon EOS 2000D (Rebel T7 / 1500D).

I recently bought a used Canon EOS 2000D manufactured in 2018. I took it to an authorized Canon service center, and they confirmed that the camera is working perfectly (around 7,600 shutter actuations).

The problem is that I cannot trigger my studio flash.

My setup is:

  • Camera: Canon EOS 2000D (first version, 2018)
  • Studio flash: Dynaphos GS-300
  • Current trigger: Hähnel Combi TF (Canon version)

The Hähnel trigger powers on, the transmitter and receiver communicate correctly, and pressing the TEST button fires the flash. However, when I press the shutter button on the camera, the flash does not fire.

The Canon service center told me that my EOS 2000D is the first version with the modified 4-contact hot shoe, and that this Hähnel trigger is not compatible.

My questions are:

  1. Which wireless trigger is confirmed to work with the first-generation Canon EOS 2000D (4-contact hot shoe)?
  2. Does the Godox X1T-C (with the latest firmware) work with this camera?
  3. Would a Godox X2T-C be a better choice?
  4. Is there any way to trigger my Dynaphos GS-300 using a cable instead of wireless? The flash has a 3.5 mm sync input.
  5. Has anyone here successfully used studio flashes with this specific version of the EOS 2000D?

I would really appreciate recommendations from people who have actually tested this camera with studio flash triggers.

Hi @Vlad24 no they’re not any that will work with your camera. No 3rd Party manufacturer has ever found a way to make it work. Only Canon EX series, EL-100 & EL-1 will work. The only way to make your current setup work is to upgrade to a body that has all 5 contacts on the hot shoe. Also the Godox trigger won’t work either it relies on the center pin to fire. But since your camera doesn’t have it won’t fire at all.

It is good advice to upgrade your 2000D.

But.....  Your Dynaphos GS-30 should have an Optical Slave Mode.  Set it to S2 and use your 2000D pop-up flash to trigger your GS-30.

Here is a video that describes how this works:

But only if the camera is in manual mode, or if the slave ignores the E-TTL pre-flash.
