I have a Canon 50d, I'm trying to find out hope to tell how many total shots or actuations
my camera has taken?

Went to the site and bells and whistle's went off. That means it must be a secruity risk. I thought there was away inside the camera to tell.

There are only two ways to find out the shutter actuations, send it to Canon or download software that can read it. Nothing inside of the camera can give you this info.
The eoscount website is safe, it needs to install a utility and your computer is being suspicious. I have used it many times without any problems but nowadays they do charge $1.50 per reading.
Another software that will work for your 50D is eosinfo, it's still free.
