Auto focus on t3i LCD not working

Hi I just bought a used t3i and when I turn LCD at AF mode and press half button for auto focus. The image comes and goes off on LCD to view finder and keep making a click noise. How can I auto focus on LCD? It auto focus on a blank LCD screen. Is it a defect or some setting proble? Plz help.

Does the camera work properly when taking pictures through the viewfinder?

I hate to say, but it sounds like you may have purchased a defective camera.  Return it and get your money back, if it is not too late to do so.  Forget about trying to fix this unit.
