Which Lens Should I Buy Next for My R50?

chiss
Apprentice

I can provide as many details as necessary if I leave any pertinent info out here. Sorry, this is my first thread on Reddit.

I've only had my R50 since Christmas 2023 and I'm still in the process of learning everything about it and photography itself. To keep this short, I already have the following lenses:

RF-S 18-45mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM (The standard lens kit that comes with the camera body.)

RF-S 10-18mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM (For a wider angle.)

RF-S 50mm f1.8 STM (For shooting in low light.)

I realize what I photograph will greatly influence the answers to the thread, but I simply want a well-rounded set of lenses considering I plan to shoot many types of photography. I'm not opposed to the lenses that zoom appx. 100-400mm; however, they are expensive and I'd just have to save up.

Speaking of, are the aforementioned lenses the only option to get super close-up pics? ( I believe it's called macro photography but could be wrong.) Or are there more affordable or even better lenses for macro photography? I expect this hobby to be expensive, so I'm just trying to get a good base of hardware and knowledge from which to build.

Of course, all info/help is greatly appreciated and I'll return with gratitude, even if it's just a measly upvote. Sincerely though, thank you. I look forward to reading your responses. Take care, all!

A relatively short telephoto might be handy, like the RF-S 55-210:

(As you can see, this lens does not do too badly for Macro.)

Maybe consider the RF-S 55-210

Keep an eye on the Canon refurbished site, there are some nice deals. I just picked up the Refurbished RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM for $520, it's in perfect shape and I added the 2 year CarePak. I saved a little over $100 on the lens. They are out of stock right now but show up fairly often.

Not being sure of what type of photography you are planning for a macro lens but there are two macro lenses in stock right now, a 24mm and 100mm, I'm waiting on the 35mm to show up.

Giving a little more detail on the type of photography you would like to use the macro lenses for would help the community give you a better recommendation. Either way, good luck with your research.

I think this a good suggestion. It seems that it will fit nicely with your lens inventory.
