Lens error with 24-105

I am getting a lens error.  I am in Haiti.  Is there anything I can do short of sending the lens back to the states?

What error are you getting? You could try cleaning the lens and body contacts.

The main problem I know with 24-105L is that fragile Red Ring of elegance that breaks very easily in course of ownership of the lens. I guess there is a problem with plastic on metal, and its reaction with cold and hot weather or likewise.
