Gold ring

Are gold ring lenses still a good choice I currently own a 17-55mm 2.8 which is the best, but want am looking to buy something new. I was looking at the 50 1.4 but I’m not sure. Is there any good gold ring lenses still out there worth buying today? Thanks.

The gold ring was used to indicate a usm ultrasonic focus motor.  Later ones just said "ultrasonic".  

The 17-55 is indeed a great lens. 

What do you have already and what sort of photography do you shoot?

You need to decide what you want to use the new lens for.  What doesn't the current 17-55mm not do for you?  Of course I understand getting a new lens just because.

To me for a second lens I would not get a 50mil.  They are pretty hard to use "generally".  It is a more specialized lens.

Something in a mid to long tele would be a good choice.  EF 70-200mm for instance.
