I have an expensive Canon EF 24-70 f2.8 L USM lens that I bought new years ago. Yesterday, during an important assignment, my 5d MarkIII would not fire when lens was at 24mm. The camera would not fire from 24 to about 50mm range. After 50mm, it would fire. Many of the images from that camera proved useless because they were very soft. To be sure, I switched my 24-70 with another 5D Mark III body that had my Canon 70-200 f2.8 L USM lens and the results were the same therefore, the problem is with the 24-70 lens. In 4 days, I have more important assignments shooting a college graduation. Besides sending the lens into Canon repair, is there a FIX that I can do or is it possibly a firmware issue?

Canon lost me when they told me that they would not support the repair. Disappointing but I accepted their reply but when I asked them if they could refer me to a reputable repair outfit, they said they could not but they did refer me me to a Canon 'upgrade' program and when I followed up on their generous offer, I would have to pay $1800 for a similar lens to replace my now worthless one. Thanks but no thanks.

If they don’t have parts how can they repair it they can’t. And if something does happen in their repair facility. Then they don’t have parts then that’s a problem. So Canon will refuse to repair unsupported lenses. You can look for a used replacement there are plenty copies of that lens.

How can one know if they don't have 'parts' if they won't even look at their product. Case closed.

Simple it’s out of its service life. Then did Canon outsource parts from a 3rd Party company that’s no longer around or cannot make the parts in question. Therefore Canon can refuse to repair the lens in question.

Everything made by man will eventually run its course and will have a point where repair is not an option. Doesn't make any difference whether its your car or computer or microwave or lens or whatever. Consider, Canon doesn't have to offer you anything for a worthless broken camera or lens. How many companies do that, ah, none.
Yeah it's a bummer and none of us like it when our stuff finally goes belly up but its a fact of life. Most of the time its seems to be sooner than later, too.
