Problem with fax on Canon MX870 Multifunctional printer

I have just recently started having a problem with my MX870 Multifunction printer.  When I send a fax, I get the status sheet back stating that the fax went through; however, the bottom half of the status printout that shows part of the fax information I was sending comes back with nothing but black lines running down the page where the part of the document I am faxing usually appears so that I know what I faxed.  I hope this is clear.  The top portion of the status sheet that is printed (after the fax completes sending) is totally okay.  What is happening and can I (who is technically challenged) fix it?
