I have a canon pixma mx860 all in one multi function printer that I am trying to use in order to scan a picture to my memory card. I am needing to replace one of the ink cartridges. Every time I turn on the printer, I always get an out of ink message. All I want to do is scan a picture to my memory card. How do I get past the error ink message? I hit ok, nothing happens. Can I not scan with no ink? I would think I could

Hi PhotoBug87,
The PIXMA MX860 must have all of the inks installed and contain ink for the unit to able to print.
If you are experiencing a "Low Ink" warning, you will still be able to scan, but not print.
If you are getting a "Ink Out" error, you will not be able to use the unit until the ink is replaced.
These precautions are in place to prevent damage to the printer from occurring if printing with no ink is attempted. The printer uses the ink to cool the printhead during the printing process. If no ink is present, the printhead could be damaged.

Thanks for being active in our community! We're happy to share that it's possible to scan with an empty ink tank or cartridge. To start scanning, follow the instructions at this link.
