Can someone explain to me why the heck the ink for this printer costs the same as what I paid for the printer brand new? I mean at this rate I could just go buy a new printer each time I run out of ink cheaper than replacing my ink cartridges

It's because you succumbed to the allure of an extremely cheap printer, one which has only two cartridges....black and tri-color, and if one color runs out you throw away the leftover colors. This is commonly referred to as a "throwaway" printer. It's a case of giving away a printer and making the profits on the ink.
In addition, the TS3522 will not print borderless pictures larger than 5 x 7 inches, another shortcoming discovered by numerous people writing to this forum.
Spend more for a printer, one which uses four separate ink cartridges. That's how to avoid the trap you are caught in.
