Canon EOS M50 - External Audio Jack not working

Hi,

I bought a Canon M50, and just recently realized that when I try to use the external 3.5mm audio input jack it gives (ie. pushes in) about 1 - 1.5mm.  I also noticed that the external mic doesn't record sound which leads me to believe that the jack broken.  

Is this common?  Does anyone know how much it would be to fix?  I called a local camera repair shop and they told me it would need an entire new circuit board, and that they can't buy the spare parts to fix it...

Have a similar camera the M6 Mark II with a bad mic jack. Just quoted $460 by 3rd party to repair it. Unbelievable. Definitely not paying for that!

Hello thorium2,

I would first suggest trying a different cable or microphone altogether to ensure that it is an issue with the camera's mic jack. Have you tried adjusting the sound recording level manually to see if that helps? Please make sure that the camera is in a Creative mode, such as [P], [Av], [Tv], or [M] to ensure that we have access to all of the menu settings. I would suggest setting the camera to the [P] mode. Set the [Sound recording] menu option to [Manual]. Select [Rec. level] and press the < or > keys while looking at the level meter to adjust the sound-recording level. Look at the peak hold indicator and adjust so that the level meter sometimes lights up on the right of the “12” (-12 dB) mark for the loudest sounds. If it exceeds “0”, the sound will be distorted. In terms of service costs, the EOS M50 has a flat rate repair cost of $229.

If you already have a My Canon Account and your product is already registered, simply click on the “Get Repair Services” link on the left menu and follow the onscreen instructions to arrange for service for your product. 

 

If you have a My Canon Account and your product is not registered, you must register your product first. Click on the “Get Repair Services” link on the left menu, then click on the “Register Product” link on the right. After your product is registered, click on the “Get Repair Service” link on the left menu and follow the onscreen instructions to arrange for service for your product. 

 

If you do not have a My Canon Account, you will need to create one. After you create your account, click on the “Add Product” link to register your first product. After your product is registered, click on the “Get Repair Service” link on the left menu and follow the onscreen instructions to arrange for service for your product. 

 

Once you have completed the repair request, you will have an opportunity to print a copy of the request for your records. This request form will also contain shipping instructions and an address label that you will attach to the outside of your shipping box when mailing your equipment for repair.

Thank you for the detailed response -- I assume you're located in Costa Mesa?  Is it possible to drop it off in person?  Does the work come with a warranty?  The port being loose is frustrating as I have barely used the camera and it's in excellent shape -- so this seems more like a design/manufacturing issue and at $229, it's really borderline worth/not worth.
